You need an icon: a bell for notifications, a chart for a dashboard tile, a trash can for a delete button. This lesson gets you one, downloaded, in under a minute.
Open Icon Studio
Open Icon Studio. The search box sits in the app bar at the top. Under it, the screen has three parts:
- On the left, the sets, the styles and the topics.
- In the middle, the grid of icons, under a heading that names the set and says how many icons match.
- On the right, the icon you picked, drawn large, with its Style and Export tabs.
Search
Click the search box (or press / from anywhere) and type a word, such as bell. The grid shows the bells in Lucide, the set Icon Studio opens with, and the heading above the grid says how many. To see the bells of all eight sets, press All sets at the top of the list on the left.
Search looks at each icon's name and at the words its set tags it with. So notification finds bells too, and money finds coins, wallets and banknotes. If nothing matches, try a shorter or plainer word: delete finds less than trash.
The slider in the heading, next to Select, makes the grid's icons bigger or smaller. Bigger helps when you compare details.
Pick one and check it small
Press an icon. It appears on the right, drawn large, with its name and set underneath. Beside the large drawing, the same icon is shown at 16, 24, 32 and 48 pixels.
Look at the small sizes before you decide. An icon with fine details can look great large and turn into a blur at 16 pixels, which is the size of most icons in buttons and menus. If the small ones do not read, pick a simpler icon.
Three small round buttons at the left edge of the stage switch the background between see-through, light and dark, so you can see the icon where it will be used. See-through picks the squares your icon stands out on, so the icon always shows.
Download it
Open the Export tab and press SVG or PNG.
- SVG for websites, apps and design tools. It stays sharp at every size and is a few hundred bytes.
- PNG for email, slides and tools that do not take SVG. Pick the size first under PNG size: the size you set, twice it or four times it, in pixels. Twice the shown size keeps it sharp on high-resolution screens.
Copy SVG and Copy PNG put the icon on your clipboard instead, ready to paste into Figma, a slide or a document.
You can use it anywhere
Every set in Icon Studio is under the MIT, ISC or Apache 2.0 licence: free for personal and commercial work, with no credit required on the page. The main condition is to keep the licence notice with copies you distribute, which lesson 6 covers.
Next: choosing between the eight sets.
