Profile README Studio works like a page builder: the preview is the page, and you change it where you see it. This lesson covers the layouts you can start from and every way of editing, so you spend your time on content instead of Markdown.
Pick a layout
Click Templates in the top bar. Start from a layout shows 31 layouts, from a minimal one to a full dashboard, in two groups: Personal and Organization. Sort by orders them by recommendation, name, length, or light and dark themes first.
Applying a layout replaces your blocks. Your username and your name stay, and Ctrl+Z undoes it if you change your mind.
Add blocks
On the left, Add blocks lists the 45 block types in groups: Intro, About, Skills, Stats, Projects, Contact, Extras and Layout. Search them with the search box, or press A anywhere to search.
- Click a block to add it below the selected block
- Drag it onto the page to drop it exactly where you want
- Browse with examples shows every ready-made style of each block side by side (all 15 banner shapes and effects, every top languages layout, every callout kind, every snake colour), drawn with your username, theme and colour mode. Add this under a style adds the block already set up that way, so you do not have to change its settings afterwards
Edit on the page
The preview in the middle is your README as GitHub shows it. You work in it directly:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Click a block | Selects it and shows its settings on the right, under Block |
| Double-click text | Type straight into a heading, line or bullet |
| Drag a block | Moves it |
| Drag the blue handle | Resizes a card, image or banner |
| Esc | Back to the page settings |
| Ctrl+Z | Undoes anything |
Reorder with the outline
Outline lists every block from top to bottom. Drag them to reorder, or use Alt and the arrow keys to move the selected block. With a long README, the outline is faster than scrolling the preview.
Know page settings and block settings
The panel on the right has two tabs:
- Page settings apply to every block: your GitHub username, Your name, Section headings (large, medium or small), Space between blocks, Widget colours and whether to Hide card borders
- Block shows the settings of the block you selected
Type your username once in page settings. Every stats card, streak and link uses it from there.
Switch to the markdown
Above the preview, Markdown shows the README as text. You can edit it there directly; the blocks update as you type. This is useful for a quick fix, or to paste in a snippet from somewhere else. Preview switches back.
For all shortcuts, open All shortcuts at the bottom of the page settings.
The next lesson fills your README with your own details, from your GitHub profile, your resume or an AI assistant.
