AI interior design prompts: Scandinavian, Japandi and more

Interior design prompts for ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney and Flux that give a calm, real-looking room, with the result of each. Describing a style by its materials, keeping the walls straight, light and palette, and how to redesign a photo of your own room without losing its windows and doors.

Short answer: Describe the style by its materials and furniture, not just its name: "pale oak floor, a low linen sofa in warm off-white, a round light wood coffee table" says more than "Scandinavian". Then give the camera position ("from a standing position across the room, walls and verticals kept perfectly vertical"), the light ("soft diffused daylight"), three colours and "uncluttered". To redesign your own room, attach its photo and say what must stay: walls, windows, doors and floor.

"A cosy living room" gives you a generic showroom with too many cushions. Interior photographs look real because of a few specific things: real materials, straight walls, one kind of light and a short palette. Put those in the prompt and the room looks like a page from a design magazine instead of a furniture catalogue.

How do you describe an interior style?

By the things in it. The style's name is a starting point; the materials do the work:

StyleWords that make it
ScandinavianPale oak floor, linen sofa, light wood, sheer curtains, one plant, cream and sage
JapandiLow oak platform bed, rumpled linen, round paper pendant lamp, slatted wood wall, beige, clay and charcoal
Dark academia libraryForest-green walls, floor-to-ceiling dark wood shelves, cognac leather armchair, brass floor lamp
Bright kitchenWhite zellige tiles, open wood shelf, trailing plants, butcher block counter, morning sun

Two more lines matter in every prompt: "walls and verticals kept perfectly vertical" (otherwise the model tilts them, like a phone photo taken from above) and "uncluttered" (otherwise it fills every surface).

Moody home library (Nano Banana, Flux, Midjourney, Imagen):

An interior photograph of a moody home library with deep forest-green walls and floor-to-ceiling dark wood shelves full of books whose spines show only colour and texture, a worn cognac leather armchair beside a brass floor lamp casting a warm pool of light, and a small side table with a cup of tea. An interior photograph of a bright kitchen corner in the morning: white zellige tiles with slight handmade irregularity, a light wood open shelf holding glass jars and plants, trailing pothos hanging from the top shelf, and a butcher block counter with a bowl of lemons. Morning sun from a window on the left throws leaf shadows across the tiles. Seen straight on at counter height. Photorealistic, fresh warm daylight, white, green and lemon yellow palette. How do you redesign a photo of your own room?

Attach the photo and split the prompt in two: what stays and what changes. For example: "Redesign the room in the reference photo. Keep the walls, windows, doors, ceiling and floor plan exactly as they are, with the same camera position. Change the furniture, colours and decor to a Japandi style: a low oak bed, sand-coloured linen, a round paper pendant lamp, beige, clay and charcoal." Without the first half, models often move a window or invent a wall.

Then treat the result as a mood picture, not a plan. The model does not know your room's measurements, so a sofa that looks right in the picture may not fit through the door. Change one thing per round ("now make the walls sage green") rather than asking for everything at once, so you can see what each change does.

Why ask for no readable text?

Book spines, framed posters and jar labels come back as half-letters that make a photo look fake at a glance. The library prompt's "books whose spines show only colour and texture" keeps the shelves full without a single wrong word.
