Short answer: Describe a landscape the way a photographer plans one: the time of day and the light ("dawn, soft low-angle light, mist filling the valleys"), where the camera stands ("from a high viewpoint, horizon in the upper third"), three or four colours, and what must not be there ("no people, no buildings"). Add "photorealistic documentary landscape photograph" and the aspect ratio, 16:9 for a screen or 3:2 for a print.
"A beautiful mountain landscape" gives you a postcard: oversaturated, too sharp everywhere, a lake that is too blue and often a hiker you did not ask for. Real landscape photos are mostly about light and a single clear idea. Put those two in the prompt and leave the rest out.
What makes a landscape prompt look like a real photo?
| Part | Example from the prompts below |
|---|---|
| Time and light | "late afternoon", "low golden sunlight from the right", "soft low-angle dawn light" |
| One idea | "each ridge a paler shade of blue-grey than the one in front of it" |
| The camera position | "seen from a low viewpoint on the side of the nearest dune" |
| The composition | "one sharp curving crest running from the lower left corner up into the middle" |
| A short palette | "warm ochre and cool blue", "deep navy and emerald" |
| What is missing | "no footprints, no people, no vehicles" |
The last line matters more than it looks: models like to add a person for scale, a cabin by the lake or footprints in the sand.
Landscape prompts to copy
All of these are in Prompt Gallery, written for Nano Banana, Flux, Midjourney and Imagen. They need no photo.
Misty mountains at dawn:
A wide landscape photograph of layered mountain ridgelines at dawn, each ridge a paler shade of blue-grey than the one in front of it as morning mist fills the valleys between them. The nearest ridge is dark and sharp with a few pine silhouettes along its top; the farthest ridges almost dissolve into a pale peach sky where the sun is just below the horizon. Seen from a high viewpoint across the valleys, horizon in the upper third, no single foreground object stealing attention. Photorealistic documentary landscape photograph, soft low-angle dawn light, muted blue and peach palette, fine atmospheric haze. No people, no buildings, No readable text, signage, labels or numbers anywhere in frame, no watermark, no logos. Aspect ratio 3:2. Keep it original: do not depict any celebrity or real public figure, and do not copy any existing painting, artwork, film or game character, mascot, logo or trademarked design.Desert dunes at golden hour:
A landscape photograph of tall sand dunes in the late afternoon, one sharp curving crest running from the lower left corner up into the middle of the frame, its sunlit side glowing warm orange and its shaded side falling into deep rust-brown shadow. Fine wind ripples cover the sand in the foreground and catch the low light. The sky is clear and pale, fading from warm near the horizon to soft blue above. Seen from a low viewpoint on the side of the nearest dune. Photorealistic, low golden sunlight from the right, warm ochre and cool blue palette, crisp detail in the ripples. No footprints, no people, no vehicles, No readable text, signage, labels or numbers anywhere in frame, no watermark, no logos. Aspect ratio 16:9. Keep it original: do not depict any celebrity or real public figure, and do not copy any existing painting, artwork, film or game character, mascot, logo or trademarked design.Northern lights over a lake:
A night landscape photograph of green and faint violet aurora ribbons curving across a starry sky above a still northern lake, the ribbons mirrored almost perfectly in the black water. A low line of dark spruce forest separates sky from reflection across the middle of the frame, and a few smooth rocks break the water in the near foreground, lit faintly green by the sky. Wide view from the shore at ground level. Photorealistic long-exposure night photograph, pinpoint stars, deep navy and emerald palette, natural colours rather than neon. No people, no cabins, no lights on the shore, No readable text, signage, labels or numbers anywhere in frame, no watermark, no logos. Aspect ratio 3:2. Keep it original: do not depict any celebrity or real public figure, and do not copy any existing painting, artwork, film or game character, mascot, logo or trademarked design.Coastal cliffs before a storm:
A landscape photograph of tall green-topped sea cliffs dropping into a churning grey-green ocean, white surf exploding against the rocks at their base while a heavy slate-coloured storm front rolls in from the sea. A thin break in the clouds lets one shaft of pale light fall on the cliff face. Seen from further along the clifftop, the coastline receding into the distance on the right. Photorealistic, moody natural light, desaturated greens and cool greys, a sense of wind in the grass along the near edge. No people, no lighthouse, no boats, No readable text, signage, labels or numbers anywhere in frame, no watermark, no logos. Aspect ratio 16:9. Keep it original: do not depict any celebrity or real public figure, and do not copy any existing painting, artwork, film or game character, mascot, logo or trademarked design. The gallery also has an autumn forest path, and travel scenes: a rainy Tokyo alley at night, a quiet Venice canal, a floating market from above, an alpine train on a viaduct and a desert oasis.
Why do aurora and sunset pictures look fake?
Because the model pushes colour. Aurora comes back neon green, sunsets come back orange and purple at full strength. Ask for the opposite in words: "natural colours rather than neon", "muted blue and peach palette", "desaturated greens and cool greys". For night skies, "long-exposure night photograph, pinpoint stars" gives sharp stars instead of a painted glow.
Why are numbers in the prompt ignored?
Counts are loose. The floating market prompt asks for "a dozen narrow wooden boats" and the result has several dozen. If an exact number matters (three boats, one tree), keep it small and say it plainly ("exactly three boats, no others"), or choose a composition where the count does not matter.
Which aspect ratio should a landscape use?
| Use | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|
| Desktop wallpaper, a website header, a video | 16:9 |
| A print or a classic photo frame | 3:2 |
| A phone wallpaper, a Pinterest pin | 2:3 or 9:16 |
| An Instagram post | 4:5 |
Wide scenes need a wide frame: a 1:1 square crops away the very width that makes a landscape. Aspect ratios for AI images has the full list, and AI wallpaper prompts covers screens.
